Virginia folk artist Lilian Meeks is best known for narrative scenes of Colonial Williamsburg and Tidewater life—historic streetscapes, gardens, and community moments painted in an approachable, storybook style. Inspired by Grandma Moses, she didn’t begin painting until 1975 (age 59), yet went on to complete nearly 200 paintings. Look closely and you’ll often spot her signature character “Mrs. Buttermilk,” a familiar figure who appears in most of her works.
