Bidding Process

HOW TO BID

1. Create an Account

To participate in our auctions, click the Login/Register button to create an online bidding account.

Your bidder number and the password you create will be used each time you log in to place bids.

Before you can bid, you'll also need to add a valid credit card to your account. The card on file will be charged at the close of each auction. We do not accept cash payments or personal checks. For certain purchases, such as vehicles, we can also accept cashiers checks.

As a security and privacy measure, bidder numbers are obfuscated. While your bidder number may be 12345, other bidders will only see it displayed as 1***5 during the auction.

2. Browse & Preview Items

All of our auctions are online only.

We strongly encourage all bidders to preview items before placing bids. Previewing allows you to inspect an item's condition, authenticity, working order, color, size, and any other details that may be important to you.

Items are sold "As-Is, Where-Is" with no warranty or guarantee, either expressed or implied. All sales are final. No returns will be accepted.

If you visit our gallery, you'll notice lot tags attached to items:

  • Lot Number: The lot number you'll use to find the item online.
  • Auction Close Date: The auction closing date for that sale.
  • Consignor Number: The seller's identification number.

The same process applies to onsite sales, although the lot tags may look slightly different depending on the location.

Most auctions are available for bidding 10-14 days before they close, giving you plenty of time to browse and place bids.

3. Place Your Bids

Minimum bids start at $3.00.

We do not set reserve prices. Every item sells to the highest bidder when the auction closes.

You can place bids at any time while the auction is open. The Maximum Bid feature allows the system to automatically bid on your behalf up to your maximum amount if another bidder places competing bids.

Bidding Tips

  • Refresh the page you are bidding on regularly, especially as the auction is closing. This ensures you are seeing the most current bid status and whether you've been outbid.
  • We also send outbid emails when another bidder places a higher bid on an item you've bid on.
  • We recommend using your Watch List to keep track of items you're interested in and refreshing those pages frequently as each lot nears closing.

Using Your Watch List

When you're logged in, you'll see a small yellow star outline next to each lot. Click the star to add that item to your Watch List. Once added, the star will become solid.

To view your Watch List, click your profile in the top right corner and select View Watch List.

4. Auction Closing

Our online auctions use a staggered closing system to give all bidders a fair opportunity to compete.

  • Lots close in numerical order, with four (4) lots scheduled to close each minute.

  • If a bid is placed on a lot during its final four (4) minutes, the closing time for that lot automatically extends by another four (4) minutes.

  • Each additional bid placed during the final four minutes triggers another extension.

This system helps prevent last-second bidding from unfairly determining the outcome and gives all interested bidders time to respond.

5. Payment

At the close of the auction, your card on file will be charged automatically.

Each invoice includes:

  • A 20% Buyer's Premium
  • 6% Virginia Sales Tax, unless you have a valid tax-exempt certificate on file.

We do not accept cash payments or personal checks. For certain purchases, such as vehicles, we can also accept cashiers checks or wire transfers.

If you experience any issues with your payment or the credit card on file, please contact Tegan at info@cannonsauctions.com.

6. Pick Up Your Items

Pickup instructions vary depending on the auction.

Gallery Sales (auctions with "Gallery" in the title):

  • Pickup is Thursday and Friday immediately following the auction closing.

Onsite Sales (sales held at homes or other locations):

  • Pickup takes place at the auction location during the specific dates and times listed for that sale.
  • Please pay close attention to the pickup information, as these locations often have strict access windows that must be followed. Cannon's will not have access to the auction location once checkout has been concluded.

Preview information is also listed separately for each auction and may vary by location.

Due to insurance liability, our staff cannot assist with packing, loading, or moving purchased items. Please plan accordingly and bring enough help for larger or heavier purchases.

Some items, such as shelving, furniture, or mounted pieces, may require basic tools for disassembly or removal. Please bring any tools you may need, as Cannon's Auctions does not provide tools or assist with disassembly.

We also do not provide packing materials. If you are purchasing fragile or delicate items, please bring your own supplies, including:
