Quick Start Guide
Don't have time to read everything? Here's the basics:
- Schedule a consignment appointment by calling (804) 325-8598 ext 1
- Deliver your items to the gallery.
- Complete your paperwork and inventory sheet.
- We'll photograph, catalog, and list your items for auction.
- Track your items online before and after they sell.
- Approximately two weeks after the sale closes, we'll mail your check.
Consignment Steps
1. Schedule a Consignment Appointment
We accept consignments Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM by appointment only.
Please call the gallery at (804) 325-8598 ext 1 to schedule your appointment.
Appointments are typically booked about one week in advance, so we recommend calling ahead to reserve your preferred date and time.
2. Submit Your Items
Deliver your items to the gallery for your scheduled appointment.
Please note:
- Consignors are responsible for transporting their items to the gallery.
- Consignors are responsible for unloading their vehicles.
- Cannon's Auctions staff cannot assist with loading or unloading consignments.
If you need assistance moving larger items, we recommend:
- Cornelius Taylor – Tru Logistics: (804) 306-9871
- Kendall Jones: (804) 972-8840
- Kyle Davis – MoveJunk: (804) 587-8183
- Adam Barnard: (804) 573-3440
Remember: Clean goods are worth more money!
3. Complete Your Paperwork
If you're a new consignor, our team will complete a Consignment Contract with you and create an Inventory Sheet listing the items you are consigning.
If you've consigned with us before, you'll simply complete a new Inventory Sheet. Don't worry if you don't remember your consignor number—we can look it up by your name.
You'll initial the paperwork acknowledging your understanding of our commission structure, and you'll receive copies of your paperwork for your records.
Each item will be tagged with a small red consignor tag displaying your consignor number.
4. Commission Structure
Commission is based on the sale price of each lot, not your entire consignment.
A lot is simply the group of items being sold together. A lot could be:
- A single piece of furniture
- A set of china
- A piece of jewelry
- A collection of similar items
Our team groups items into lots based on what we believe will achieve the best results for both you and the buyer.

If you have an item that isn't listed, or you're unsure whether we'll accept it, feel free to call the gallery or email us. We'd be happy to help.
You can also email us photos of your items or stop by the gallery to show us pictures before scheduling a consignment appointment. This is a great way to get a general idea of whether your items are a good fit for auction.
Please note: Photos are used for an initial consultation only. The final decision on whether an item is accepted for consignment is made once the item arrives at the gallery and has been inspected by our team.
If you have any provenance or documentation for your items, please bring it with you when consigning. This may include:
- Certificates of Authenticity (COAs)
- Original receipts
- Appraisals
- Original boxes or packaging
- Documentation of an item's history or ownership
Providing this information helps bidders better understand what they're buying and can often increase buyer confidence, which may result in a stronger sale price.
All consignments are reviewed before acceptance, and because the auction market is always changing, what we accept may change over time.
6. Items We Cannot Accept
Some items cannot be accepted due to their condition, category, or current market demand.
Examples include:
- Furniture or rugs with odors, mold, heavy staining, pet damage, or food residue
- Particle board or flat-pack furniture (except new-in-box items)
- Mattresses, box springs, or used bed linens
- Most used clothing (except vintage or designer pieces)
- Everyday kitchenware, miscellaneous décor, glassware, battered pots and pans, or Tupperware
- Stuffed or plush toys (except collectible Steiff)
- Non-working appliances, electronics, or power tools
- Outdated electronics (VCRs, DVD players, cassette decks, tapes, etc.)
- Pornographic material
- Liquids such as perfumes, cleaning products, or chemicals
- Newspapers or paperback books
- Empty picture frames
- Computer parts or accessories
- Entertainment centers or large media cabinets
Because the auction market changes over time, the types of items we accept may also change.
Cannon's Auctions reserves the right to decline any item deemed unsuitable for auction.
7. Processing Your Items
After your appointment, your items enter our processing queue.
Processing generally begins 2–4 weeks after your consignment appointment, depending on:
- Seasonal volume
- Current inventory levels
- Category-specific workload
Some categories move through the process faster than others. For example, furniture often reaches auction sooner than china or jewelry because of available space and our normal processing workflow.
It is also common for consignments to be spread across multiple auctions.
8. Following Your Items
You can keep track of your consignments online at any time.
From either the Auctions or Archives page:
- Enter C followed by your consignor number into the search bar.
- Example: C1234
- Browse current auctions to see which items are currently listed.
- Browse archived auctions to see what your items sold for.
You can also search for specific item types to see how similar items have performed in previous auctions.

9. Payment
Approximately two weeks after an auction closes, your payment will be processed and mailed to the address listed on your contract.
If you need to update your mailing address:
- Add the change to your inventory sheet when consigning, or
- Contact Tegan at info@cannonsauctions.com.
10. Unsold Items
For Gallery Sales, you may retrieve unsold items during the pickup days immediately following that auction if you wish.
For example, if an auction closes on July 8, unsold items may be picked up on July 9 and July 10.
After the designated pickup period, unclaimed items will be donated.
Please note:
- We do not call or email consignors to notify them when their items are scheduled to sell.
- We do not call or email consignors regarding unsold items.
11. Questions or Item Issues
If you notice an issue with one of your consignments, please email info@cannonsauctions.com and include:
- Your name
- Consignor number
- Auction date
- Lot number
- A description of the issue
12. Helpful Things to Know
- We do not use reserve prices. Every lot starts at $3.00 and sells to the highest bidder.
- Many items perform better without reserves because competitive bidding determines the final sale price.
